INTRODUCTION:
Heating extruder cylinders demands efficient heating and cooling systems to ensure optimal production. Key requirements include:
- Rapid warm-up of cylinders before production starts.
- Accurate temperature control in cylinder zones through precise thermal energy management.
- Fast cooling during production interruptions or shutdowns, especially for temperature-sensitive materials like in injection molding.
After reaching the required operating temperature, shearing energy generated by friction between plastic pellets and the cylinder wall aids in plastification. Special screw geometries further enhance mixing and melting.
To maintain the ideal processing temperature and prevent overheating, cooling is often needed due to the high frictional heat produced by fast extruder screw speeds. Heating-cooling combinations, using electrical resistance heater bands and low-pressure radial fans, regulate temperature. These air-cooled systems are cost-effective compared to oil or water-cooled systems, eliminating issues like leaks or calcification and reducing manufacturing complexity.

CONSTRUCTION
Ceramic heater bands GM.60, available in widths of 36 mm, 51 mm, 66 mm, and 81 mm, are mounted at regular intervals in the lower half of a housing casing using fixing bolts. The housing also includes a cooling fan connection flange and air deflectors, which distribute cooling air axially and tangentially for optimal cylinder airflow, preventing bending and wear.
A spacious, easily accessible electrical connection chamber is located beside the fan flange housing. Heater bands are pre-wired at the factory, and an electrical supply cable can be added if needed. The air outlet, with standard air slots, can be customized with additional deflectors.
Sensor bores and apertures are incorporated where possible. The fully removable housing cover and flexible ceramic heater bands ensure simple installation.
Accessories:
Single or double fans are available. For enhanced cooling capacity, MS fins cooling elements can be installed on the exposed cylinder surfaces between the heater bands.
